Deconvolution
i How this works

Recovers real detail lost to lens/sensor blur (Richardson-Lucy), instead of just boosting edge contrast like Sharpen. Push Amount too far and you'll see ringing (dark/light halos) at hard edges — that's the real algorithm, not a bug.

CHRO-MA-SMITH — Guide

Film looks, grain, halation and colour grading for your photos, with a photo gallery built in. Everything runs on your own device — nothing is uploaded, and every edit, LUT and export is processed locally.

Getting started

CHRO-MA-SMITH has two main views, switched with the gallery | studio toggle in the top-left corner (desktop app):

  • Gallery — browse, search, flag and organise the photos in your folders. Double-click a photo to edit it.
  • Studio — edit one photo: apply a film look, adjust light and colour, add grain and glow, crop, then export.

Three more tools live in the ⋯ menu: Match & Refine (build a LUT from a before/after pair), Color Copy (copy one photo's colour onto another) and Collage.

In the browser version, drop a photo anywhere on the window or click Open photo. Supported: JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC, WebP and camera RAW files. The desktop app also opens EXR, HDR, JPEG XL and more, and decodes RAW natively.

Press ? at any time for the full list of keyboard shortcuts.
  • Folders & collections — add the folders you keep photos in; they stay indexed in the background. Smart collections (Favourites, Picked, Rejected, Edited) and dates sit in the sidebar.
  • Culling — P picks, X rejects, U clears the flag, and the heart marks a favourite. Arrow keys move between photos.
  • Search & filters — search by name, or filter by camera, lens, ISO, flag and auto tags (dog, beach, sky, food…). People & Pets groups photos by face.
  • Get Info — right-click a photo for its details, keywords and tags.

Studio

The tool rail on the right groups every tool into six stages. Each stage opens with its tools folded; click a name in the row under the stage title to jump to a tool and open it. A tool with a square around it in the rail has been edited.

Look

  • Preset — 113 film looks (C41 still, cinema, reversal, instant, black & white and more). Hover a look to preview it on your photo, click to apply, and set its Strength.
  • Input & print — set Input to V-Log (Lumix) for V-Log stills so a normal Rec.709 look applies correctly. Highlight response and Print change how bright areas roll off.
  • Apply LUT / LUT chart — drop your own .cube, or use the LUT chart to turn any Lightroom preset into one (see the note below).
  • All FX (top bar) — applies your chosen effects in one click. The ▾ beside it picks which effects, their strengths and the look.
Turning a Lightroom preset into a .cube: download the LUT chart, apply your preset to it in Lightroom, export it (sRGB, full size), then drop the export on Apply LUT. The result is ready to download (Lumix Lab-compatible) or save. A LUT carries global colour and tone only — not masks, sharpening or grain.

Light

  • Histogram — live levels with shadow/highlight clipping warnings; click a clip marker to show clipped areas on the photo.
  • Basic — exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, temperature, tint, vibrance and saturation. The eyedropper sets white balance from something neutral; Auto sets levels and white balance for you.
  • Curves — master and per-channel point curves. Click to add a point, drag to shape, double-click to remove.
  • Halation — the red-orange glow real film gives bright edges. Shadow protect stops dark details inside bright areas flooding red.
  • Bloom — soft highlight glow.

Colour

  • Mixer — shift the hue, saturation and luminance of eight colour bands independently.
  • Wheels — tint shadows, midtones and highlights.
  • Point colour — pick one exact colour in the photo and change only that.

Texture

  • Noise, Sharpen, Lens — noise reduction, sharpening and lens correction.
  • Masks — radial, linear, brush and AI masks (subject, sky, skin) with their own exposure, colour and tone. Show on photo draws the selection; O cycles its modes.
  • Grain — film grain, shown at its true export size in the 1:1 view.
  • Artifacts — dust, hairs, scratches and light leaks; Reshuffle re-rolls their placement.
  • Effects — vignette, clarity, texture and dehaze. Retouch removes spots and blemishes.

Skin Tone mask (even out an uneven tan)

  • Most colour controls shift every tone by the same amount, so a patchy tan stays patchy. Uniformity pulls the selected skin toward one target: areas far from it move a lot, areas already close barely move.
  • Add a + Skin mask and click a mid-tone patch of skin. Move the shape so it covers the person you mean — colour alone can't tell skin from sand or wood. Use + Brush or − Subtract for anything the shape can't isolate.
  • Set Show on photo to Selection, then shift-click each different kind of skin (matte, shaded, paler, pinker) until it all reads red. A patch that is only weakly selected barely moves.
  • Keep Feather low so colour, not position, decides how much each area moves.
  • Target: Match pick evens out the tone you clicked, Swatch offers the Monk Skin Tone scale, Custom takes any colour. Preserve modeling keeps the natural shading — start high.

Output

  • Crop — aspect presets, rotate, flip and Straighten (fine steps near level). Auto level finds the horizon; Set region… tells it where to look. Pick a Grid to see it on the photo.
  • Border — two stackable frames (inner and outer), including film-edge styles.
  • Canvas — mats the photo onto an aspect-ratio canvas (4:5 stops Instagram cropping a 2:3 photo), on a colour or a blurred copy of the photo.

Info

Metadata (camera, lens, exposure, size) opens first. Keywords and Tags (auto tags plus People & Pets) sit below it.

Typeface: Gramatika. Icons after Lucide (ISC). RAW decoding by LibRaw; MP4 handling by Mediabunny (MPL-2.0). Skin tone swatches use the Monk Skin Tone scale (Ellis Monk / Google, 2023), CC BY 4.0. Halation and bloom are calibrated against Dehancer's film-emulation reference.

Preview & compare

  • Scroll / pinch to zoom, drag to pan, double-click to fit. The zoom slider and the photo's name, flags and heart are in the top bar; a copy sits under the photo until you zoom.
  • Show original (eye icon, or hold Space) shows the photo without your look while held — the photo stays exactly in place.
  • Undo / Redo (⌘Z / ⌘Y). Hold Undo for the full edit and export history.
  • True 1:1 view (settings → View) renders a native-resolution crop, so grain and halation appear at their real export size.

Export

  • Export (top right) opens the export sheet: pick a size (full size down to 1080 social) and a format (match source, JPG, PNG, WebP). More has quality, file name, the destination folder, watermark, export presets, Styles and sharing.
  • Exports always render at full resolution, not preview size. Your original is never changed.
  • Styles save a whole edit to reuse on other photos; Copy / Paste edit settings is in the settings menu.

Match & Refine tab

Builds a LUT from an example. Best when you have the same photo before and after grading (e.g. a flat export and the Lightroom result).

  • Before / Original — the ungraded flat image.
  • After / Target — the graded result you want to reproduce.
  • Starting LUT / Preset (optional) — a .cube or .xmp to bootstrap the fit.
  • Name auto-fills from the target filename.
  • Generate LUT & XMP — produces a downloadable .cube (plus an .xmp) and adds it to history with a per-color summary of what changed.
A LUT captures global color & tone only — it can't reproduce sharpening, noise reduction, grain, or local masks. The output .cube is Lumix Lab-ready.

Color Copy tab

Transfers the overall color and tone of one photo onto another — no before/after pair needed.

  • Source image — the photo to grade.
  • Reference image — the photo whose look you want.
  • Download .cube LUT / Download .xmp Preset — export the matched grade, with a summary of the characteristics copied.

This is a per-channel histogram match — great for a quick mood transfer, looser than a true Match & Refine fit.

Collage

Combine several photos into one image: Add photos, pick a canvas aspect and a layout, set spacing, margin, corner rounding and background, then Export collage. Shuffle re-orders the photos.

FAQ

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. All decoding, grading and exporting runs on your device. The app works fully offline. The one exception is the optional Google Photos connection below — and only when you use it.
Can I use Google Photos?
Yes — optional and off by default. Google Photos… (Look → More) opens Google's own picker so you can filter and select photos from your library, and Upload exports (Export → More) mirrors every export into a “Chromasmith” album. It needs a one-time free setup at console.cloud.google.com, and the steps differ slightly depending on whether you're using the browser/GitHub Pages build or the desktop app:

1) create a project, 2) enable the Google Photos Picker API and Photos Library API (APIs & Services → Library), 3) configure the OAuth consent screen (External → stay in Testing, add your own Gmail as a test user), then:

Browser / GitHub Pages: create Credentials → OAuth client ID → Web application and add this app's address to BOTH lists — Authorized JavaScript origins gets the origin (e.g. https://yourname.github.io) and Authorized redirect URIs gets the full page URL (e.g. https://yourname.github.io/Chroma-App/chromasmith-22.html).

Desktop app: create Credentials → OAuth client ID → Desktop app instead — no origins or redirect URIs to register at all; sign-in opens your system's default browser and completes over a local loopback connection (127.0.0.1), then hands control back to the app.

Either way, paste the client ID when the app asks (change it later via ID…). Notes: selection happens in Google's picker — the API no longer allows apps to browse your library directly; uploads count against your Google storage; sign-in lasts about an hour (the app re-prompts automatically); on the browser build, allow pop-ups for this site.
Can I edit a photo in CHRO-MA-SMITH from inside Lightroom?
Desktop app only. Lightroom Classic: Preferences → External Editing → Additional External Editor → choose Chromasmith (16-bit TIFF, sRGB recommended — the pipeline is sRGB/Rec.709). Then right-click a photo → Edit In → Chromasmith. Lightroom (cloud/CC): right-click a photo → Edit In → pick Chromasmith the first time (same TIFF handoff). Either way, edit as normal — a new Save to Lightroom button appears next to the regular Export button while a handoff photo is open. Use it to write straight back over the file Lightroom gave you (Lightroom re-imports and syncs the result automatically); the normal Export button is still there too, unchanged, for a regular local export of the same photo.
Can I browse my Lightroom cloud photos?
Desktop app only, and it needs your own Adobe API client (Adobe Developer Console → create a project → Add API → Lightroom Services → OAuth credential type Native App). Unlike Google Cloud Console's self-serve testing mode, Adobe's Lightroom Partner APIs have historically needed Adobe's own approval on top of just creating a project — it may not work immediately even with a real client ID. A Native App credential redirects through a custom URL scheme (not a plain localhost port like Google's), which is fixed per-project — if you create your own Adobe integration rather than using an existing one, the app's redirect URI constant needs updating to match yours. Once connected (Lightroom → Connect), pick an album from the dropdown and click a thumbnail to pull that photo straight into the studio.
My RW2 / RAW colors don't match Lightroom.
First check what's showing your comparison — macOS Preview shows the camera's embedded JPEG (warmer/darker), not the real RAW render. Also pick the matching RAW profile. The remaining difference is usually just Lightroom's default noise reduction and sharpening, which a LUT can't carry.
A .cube looks wrong in the Lumix Lab app.
Lumix needs a #LUMIXPHOTOSTYLE STD tag; without it the camera assumes V-Log and the colors go off. Every Download .cube from CHRO-MA-SMITH already includes it.
Why is my grain bigger in the preview than the export?
The normal preview is downscaled, so effects look larger relative to the image. Use the 1:1 button to see grain & halation at true export scale.
A preset looks broken on the LUT chart but fine on photos.
Some captured LUTs have garbage in fully-saturated corners that real photos rarely hit. Always sanity-check a captured preset on the LUT chart, which spans the whole color cube.
Will my edits be kept?
In the desktop app every edit is saved with the photo automatically. In the browser, use Save session or a Style; saved LUTs live in the browser too, and Safari may clear them after ~7 days of disuse, so keep a .cube copy of anything important.
It looks like an old version.
The version is shown in ⋯ → About CHRO-MA-SMITH. In the browser, hard-refresh to clear the cached page; on the desktop, download the latest release.
